Don’t fall into the trap of never being satisfied with what you have. It’s easy …

Don't fall into the trap of never being satisfied with what you have. It's easy to continually distract yourself with bigger goals, but it can be difficult to appreciate your life as it is right now.

This tendency is natural. For 99% of the time that humans have existed on this planet, being happy or at peace meant danger or death. We had to stay on our toes just to stay alive.

Even though we're no longer being chased by saber tooth tigers, that part of our brain hasn't changed. Practicing gratitude can help remind us that our life is actually pretty damn good, all things considered.

A PERSONAL EXAMPLE:
Ever since I was introduced to entrepreneurship by my first mentor when I was 18, it's been my goal to not only work for myself, but also have freedom of time and location.

When I finally reached that goal in 2014, I was SO excited. But eventually, the novelty and newness of the accomplishment wore off and I adjusted to a new normal. In fact, most of my peers and friends that I had made along the way were doing even “better” than I was!

It would've been easy for me to slip into a place where I was always dissatisfied with where I was at. But I caught myself before I fell into that trap. I reminded myself that I had achieved something I had been fantasizing about for a decade!

Once I really let that thought sink in, I was instantly filled with gratitude. And although I sometimes still have challenging days, I always go back to gratitude. Gratitude for how far I've come. Gratitude for where I'm at. Gratitude for where I'm going.

If you always think “success” is just around the corner with the next job, the next lover, the next achievement, it will never come. Make it a habit to celebrate small wins and milestones along the way to your larger goals.

That last point is major 🔑
When you trust your own path, you don't need to prove the other is wrong.
*
If anyone believes they have to force a point of view on someone else, they probably don't believe in the power of that point of view themselves. The idea of forcing your point of view on someone else is an expression of powerlessness.
*
Sharing your experiences & perspectives with others = cool. But looking down on others for thinking, believing, or living differently than you do = NOT cool.
*
It takes sooooo much energy to impose your will on others. I know because I used to do it constantly. (Always for their own good, of course 😜)
*
When I stopped worrying about what others were doing and started focusing on my own personal development, my stress levels decreased and my joy increased. I highly recommend it. What do you think?

Today is my birthday and as such, I think it's a great day for some self-reflection (as if I needed an excuse lol). I took inventory of a few of my values I hold dear and wrote a blog post about them. The link is in my bio if you want to take a look ☝️

A question I'm often asked is: “How do I stay motivated?” My answer is simple: Get clear on your values.

A big reason people lack the motivation to do the things they say they want to do is because they haven’t taken the time to figure out what's truly important to them (aka what motivates them). They haven’t crystallized their values.

Values are simply the things you believe to be important. They are your “Whys” — your reasons for doing what you do.

You can tell what your values are by your actions. If you value something, you prioritize it. On the other hand, if you say you value something but your actions don’t back it up, then it’s not really a value. It's just an aspiration.

In my blog post, I reveal the underlying beliefs that drive each of my above values, along with a brief description of how each value manifests in my life. Click the link in my bio to read the full post ☝️

I’d love to hear what you value most! What are some of the things that drive YOU? Comment your 3 highest values below 👇

When I say this, people often assume their excitement needs to be in the form of some grand idea or life passion. It doesn't.

What I literally mean is: get in touch with the small, everyday things that spark your interest or pique your curiosity. Then ACT on those things to the fullest extent that you possibly can. Repeat this process ad infinitum. That's where the magic is.

Why is this important? Because these little things are the breadcrumbs that will lead you to the bigger things (i.e. your purpose, passion, etc). This process has worked for me, for many people I've observed, and probably for many people whom you admire.

Here's the tricky part: many people don't know what excites them. This is largely because they’ve ignored and suppressed their natural instinct to act on what excites them in the name of being a “responsible adult.”

The choice between being a “responsible adult” and doing what excites you is a false dichotomy. If you want to create a magical life, abandon the notion that you must choose one or the other. You can do both.
